I Could Feel the Effect of Being with the Children in my Heart, my Mind and my Body

brandman-cohort-one-and-two112 years ago this month I closed my family child care program and began working as a child care consultant, coaching and training family child care providers, and implementing city funded programs to support quality improvement. I absolutely love working with family child care providers and hope to continue coaching and training providers for a long time to come!

I had forgotten, though, how it felt working with the children. Last fall I completed my first semester of student teaching and I knew that first day with the children that I had to be back in the classroom. I could feel the effect of being with the children in my heart, my mind and my body. It was incredible, and during both semesters of my student teaching I found myself looking forward to the days I would be working in the classroom. It wasn’t really a matter of having to decide whether or not I wanted to Open my family child care again once I graduate; the children had already made that decision for me.

My daughter Katrina will also graduate in May with a degree in global studies. She knew halfway through her second year at NYU that she wanted to teach, and has worked in several schools with multiple age groups, including interning at a kindergarten during her junior year in Berlin. We have decided to open a family child care preschool program together.

Having had a successful family child care program in the past, I know this won’t be easy work. I also know that the field of early care and education has come a long way since I closed my family child care in 2002, but I believe it has traveled in the right direction, and I am super excited about rejoining the family child care community! One thing that I have learned in my coursework and student teaching is the power of daily and ongoing reflection and its role in planning curriculum, environments and interactions. I will be sharing many of these reflections here as Katrina and I go through the process of opening and running our family child care and preschool program.
